Goal Get 'Em: How To Make Your Resolutions A Reality

So there I was at the dentist office for a long overdue routine check up, casually signing my life away on documents I probably should’ve been reading, but really didn’t care enough to (adulting at it's finest). Then, I noticed my space cake self dating these important records as January 14, 2016. Scribbling out my mistake with a smile, I jotted down 2017 for the first time this new year.

Holy shit you guys, we are in this.

I mean, I know we’ve been “in this” for more than two weeks now, but I think it’s safe to say the honeymoon phase is over and reality is sinking in. Promises have been made to become better versions of ourselves, whether that be better at going to the gym, better at saving money, better at traveling the world or maybe just better at being badass.

We all begin the new year fired up, ready to grab it by the balls, until March rolls around and we lose momentum. We fall back into our old habits, get comfortable with the daily grind and let another year pass us by without really experiencing it to our fullest potential.

If this cycle sounds all too familiar, don’t sweat it Mermaid— here are my top tips to becoming a real goal getter this year!

1. Start Slow

Now if there is one life rule that I’ve learned from my experience in marathons, it’s to pace yourself. The last thing you want to do is begin the race of another year at full speed, because you are only going to burn yourself out too soon.

Take some time to meditate a little, journal a lot and really dig deep in order to figure out what it is you want for yourself. Be sure not to put too much on your plate, zone in on a point of focus by setting two, maybe three goals tops! They can be something as big as running your first marathon, or as life changing as quitting your day job and becoming a mermaid.

You can do anything you put your mind to, but first you have to take the time to figure out what it is you wish to experience this year.

2. Dream Out Loud

I know it’s kind of intimidating to get all MLK Jr. and share a dream with others, but voicing your vision will only make you more accountable. When you become clear of what you wish to accomplish, say it loud and proud! Get the manifesting process going by using words like — “I will” or “I am”.

It’s important to own up to your dreams with confidence because that’s when the magic of believing starts to happen, and faith is a magnet for miracles.

3. Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is

Now that you talked the talk, it’s time to walk the walk. After sharing your goal with others, its time to put your money where your mouth is and book the ticket, enroll in yoga teacher training or sign up for the damn race.

I’ll be the first to admit that money often keeps me from reaching my goals, but really— what better way to invest my money than in myself?

4. Take It One Day At A Time

Once you dive into your goals, don’t overwhelm yourself with how far you have to go, switch your perspective by finding joy in the journey. If you were to enjoy the race of another year by celebrating the victories of everyday, like I do with all 26.2 miles of a marathon, I guarantee you will cross the finish line of another kick ass year in the life of a goal getter.
