My Malibu Marathon Experience

You guys, I’m still on a small kine high from the Malibu Half Marathon. Although the race was over a week ago, I can’t help but get all giddy when I think about the entire experience, because it goes so far beyond the finish line.

You see, this year I made a promise to myself to do more of the shit that makes me happy—like running, writing and inspiring the world around me. As a matter of fact, while most people spent January 1st, 2017 in bed with a gnarly hang over from the night before, I decided to run a half marathon.

Deep down, my heart knew that getting back on my running mermaid grind this year would give me the peace of mind I was yearning for.

I began putting in the work and creating opportunity for myself, then before you know it, I received an invitation to be an ambassador for The Malibu Marathon!

I’m not going to lie, I was a little hesitant at first because part of me didn’t plan on staying in California for another six months, however this was an event I couldn’t pass up.

I fully believed it was the universe pointing me in the direction of my dreams, so I decided to focus on the finish line and open my heart to this incredible experience.

Now, fast forward to race day.

As I set out on the 13.1 mile journey I had every intention to PR (which means personal record in the running world) then, about one mile in I told myself to slow down.

Weird, right?

It’s a race! Who the heck would ever want to slow down?!

The way I see it, you spend months busting your ass, working towards that moment in time. Why would you ever want to rush it?!

Rather than getting caught up in my personal expectations, I decided to let go of the pressure I put on myself and really get lost in my run. Never have I felt more empowered and in-tune with the present moment. Anytime I tried taking a peek at my pace, I would bring myself back into the zone by focusing on my breath.

Then, to my surprise I crossed the finish line at a perfect 02:02:02.

Was it a PR?

Nope.

But that time means more to me than any kind of personal best, because rather than proving to myself I’m faster than before, it shows I am exactly where I should be at this moment in time.

The entire Malibu experience re-sparked my passion for running and I can’t thank everyone enough for supporting me on this journey to the finish line.

Now I’m not sure what opportunities lie before me, but I plan on letting go of all expectations and welcoming every experience with an open heart (and a glass of bubbly).

Cheers to doing more of the shit that makes you happy!
