Live Every Week Like Shark Week
Isn’t it ironic how we all have an undying fascination for sharks, yet they are one of the most feared creatures on our planet? From an epic week of documentaries on The Discovery Channel, to major blockbuster hits like “Jaws” and “Deep Blue Sea,” today’s society has the tendency to portray sharks as villains of our ocean.
But let me assure you, the media hype surrounding these intelligent creatures is about as believable as Samuel L. Jackson being able to swim.
Here’s the reality — like all life on this planet, sharks serve a vital purpose in our world.
They play a key role in our marine ecosystem functioning as the white blood cells of the ocean. It is their job to pick off the dead, dying, and weak leaving only the healthiest to reproduce.
However today, many species are on the brink of extinction, and because of the mixed feelings society has towards sharks we've lost sight of the importance behind protecting our waters.
Luckily, there are a hand-full of brave individuals making an effort to stand up for these misunderstood creatures. Take for instance the most badass mermaid around, Ocean Ramsey, and her team at One Ocean Diving.
In hopes to inspire and educate the public on shark conservation, One Ocean Diving provides the opportunity to experience your very own harmonious interaction with sharks in their natural environment.
No cage, no chum and no creepy suspenseful sound track music.
A couple of weeks ago, my mermaid friends and I joined Ocean Ramsey and Juan Oliphant, the founders of One Ocean Diving, for a pelagic marine animal research dive.
It was by far one of the most badass things I’ve ever done, take a look for yourself.

You can imagine the rush of adrenaline I felt locking eyes with these dominant animals, but never did my life feel threatened. In fact, the entire experience helped me develop a greater respect for sharks.
The ocean is a powerful world with a life of it’s very own, we as humans have no control of its force and perhaps that is why we live in fear.
But I think it's time to face your fears and just learn to appreciate the brilliance this underwater world has to offer.
It’s breathtaking — literally.
